A useful consulting brief starts with the business question. Describe what needs to change, why the question matters, and who will use the output. Keep the first version concise enough for others to review and correct.
Define the scope
Separate the work you want to explore from related questions that sit outside the brief. List the information already available, known constraints, and the people who can resolve outstanding questions.
Agree useful outputs
Specify what the discussion should produce: a priority list, an options paper, a planning framework, or a project roadmap. Define the review process and decision owner before committing resources.
Prepare for the first conversation
Send a high-level outline of your objectives and timing. Keep confidential records out of a general website form and confirm how information should be shared before providing detailed documents.
